This 6-week class is an introduction to woodturning for beginners and novices – no prior experience is required. You will learn basic spindle and bowl turning. The class focuses on fundamentals of turning – tool use and sharpening, wood selection and mounting methods. Materials will be provided for practice and simple projects that allow you to develop your skills. Each class session is split between group instruction and hands-on lathe time with 1 on 1 assistance.

It is strongly recommended that you purchase a membership at Manchester Makerspace that coincides with the class. Doing so will allow you to spend additional “lab” time outside of the scheduled class periods.

Regarding tools & materials:

Tools and materials are provided for this class – you do not need to bring anything. Students that are enthusiastic about turning may want to acquire a personal set of tools – there are many options available, including making your own. The instructor can help you select and can recommend tools that are appropriate and affordable – take advantage of this!

The same applies to materials, this is an introductory class with lots of opportunities to practice – you may find that you want more material to work with. Fortunately wood is plentiful and cheap or free in NH – you do not want to be learning on an expensive piece of exotic hardwood. The instructor can help you acquire as much material as you desire.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
David Belser has been creating, engineering and tinkering for about as long as he can remember. He started turning about 14 years ago making tops, bowls & boxes this work evolved into a focus on mechanicals and art pieces. A past president of the Granite State Wood Turners, current wood shop resource manager at Manchester Makerspace and a (previously) juried member in the League of NH Craftsman, David enjoys introducing other people to wood turning and art. He has demonstrated internationally and at numerous clubs and symposiums including the national symposium of the American Association of Woodturners.
